About Keith L. Rengert
Keith L. Rengert was
re-elected November 2008 to his fourth term as county
commissioner. He received a resounding 11,659 votes, the
largest number of votes of any contested county
commission race in 2008.
Commissioner Rengert
represents District 15 residents as a member of the
Board of Commissioners. The County Commission is the
legislative, administrative and policy-making body for
Macomb County. Commissioner Rengert has a remarkable
grasp of local issues based on his local grassroots
experience and ability to get results. He has a perfect
attendance record and is most often the first in the
office prior meetings and the last to leave. He
understands local issues and has the willingness to
provide a strong voice for those that he represents. |

Rengert has an exceptional
history in the area of Justice and Public Safety. He
retired following 31 years in the field of detention
education as a teacher/counselor with L’Anse Creuse
Public Schools; he served 18 years as a member of the
Board of Directors of the Richmond-Lenox Ambulance
Authority; six years as a member of the Community
Corrections Advisory Board and four years as Chairman of
Macomb County Justice and Public Safety Committee.

Rengert began his public
service career in 1984 when his campaign pledge was to
provide “sound and sensible leadership” at a township
level. He won his first election as township trustee in
1984. This was followed by eight consecutive election
victories which included 1988 (Trustee); 1992
(Treasurer); 1996 & 2000 (Supervisor) and 2002, 2004,
2006 & 2008 as Macomb County Commissioner.
As an elected township
official, Rengert was credited with the implementation
of technology in township tax collection and assessing.
He is credited with the construction of a new “user
friendly” township hall and founding father of the
township Senior Citizen program and senior center
building renovations. He published the first township
newsletter in 1991, designed the township seal in 1993
and guided the regional “smart growth” movement to
provide options for property owners to preserve farmland
in the five township region. |
Keith effectively implemented
measures to improve local services and manage resources
during his 18 years of township public service. During his
18 year tenure with the township, residents experienced a
reduction in the township tax rate along with improvement of
township services. As Township Supervisor the Detroit News
(1999) recognized his township as getting the “Best Bang for
the Buck in Macomb County” over the other 11 townships, 12
cities and three villages.
Commissioner Rengert is a
lifelong member (usher and board member) of St. Peter
Lutheran Church, Charter Member of Central Macomb Optimist
Club, Lions Club, Farm Bureau, Richmond Well-Head Protection
Team, Huron Pointe Sportsmen’s Association, Michigan
Association of Counties and area Historical & Genealogical
Society. He participates in three county Adopt-a-Highway
programs in conjunction with local civic groups.

Mr. Rengert has received
numerous awards of recognition through the years from
church and civic organization. As a volunteer he
received the Grondzik and Macomb County Volunteer of the
Year awards as President of the Richmond Girls Softball
Association and community volunteer. He was recognized
by the Juvenile Justice Association as Educator of the
Year and Support Staff Worker of the Year in 2001, an
appreciation award by his fellow educators for his
dedication, diligence and perseverance leading to CEA
accreditation. In 2002 he received tributes and
resolutions from both Richmond Township the
Richmond-Lenox EMS board of directors for his 18 years
of township service and dedication. In 2003 he received
tributes from his school district, the board of
commissioners and State of Michigan on his 31 years of
dedication and achievements as a leader in the field
detention education.
Keith Rengert is 60 years
old and is a lifelong resident of District 15. He
graduated from Western Michigan University with a
Bachelor’s Degree and Wayne State University with a
Masters Degree. He retired as a teacher-counselor from
L’Anse Creuse Public Schools in 2003. Commissioner
Rengert is married to wife Sallie (36 years) and they
have two daughters, Dawn (John) Lengers and Kim (James)
Steffen, and three grandchildren, Allyson, Brandon and
Brianna. |
